Timex Ironman Global Trainer With GPS Watch - Speed + Distance with Flex Tech Digital 2.4 Heart Rate Sensor Review
So after reading SEVERAL reviews online I decided to give this GPS watch a test, it was half the price of the Garmin and because I am a big guy (6'8") the idea of having a watch look on my wrist meant I could wear it day to day. The Garmin looks like a laptop on your wrist. Anyway for under $150 I was going to give it a shot and if I didn't like it then it would go back.
1. Acquiring GPS- This was a huge worry for me, this seemed to be a big complaint. At first it took around 2 minutes to get a lock on. After that it has been less than 30 seconds even when I have been indoors somewhat near a window.
2. Size and Style- again this was a huge selling point. If I take a change of clothes to work and want to run afterwards I COULD wear this watch. It is big..well ya, but it has started several conversations at work, and gotten a couple of my co-workers wanting to run as well. The display is plenty big, I had it split in 4 windows and had no problem reading all 4 windows at any point in my run.
3. Software- I do not see what the big complaint is. If you download the TIMEX version the software is pretty good. If you are a total geek then you will want more detail, and the Garmin will give you that. But this will give you enough information for 90% or more of runners out there.
4. Battery Life- Insanely good so far. Taken it on two runs and worn it all day at work and still have battery power to spare.
I cannot speak to how accurate this unit is yet because I have not run of my structured runs. I will report back when I do.
A couple things to keep in mind. Although many reviews will say otherwise TIMEX now does support foot pods, and most all ANT+ products. Mine have all sync'd up very quickly. Also the package does include the bike mount.
Finally just a word about the value. If you are a sponsored ironman racer or are independently wealthy than get the Garmin 310XT, otherwise the TIMEX GLOBAL TRAINER offers unprecedented value in the market. The features and price of this unit makes it great for anyone who is training for a Triathlon, marathon or long bike rides this is an awesome watch and should at least on your list to consider.
Update- I used the gps on three separate bike rides when I was certain of the mileage and the most it was off was .01 miles after a three mile trail which went under bridges, and heavy tree cover. I am very happy overall with this watch....Read More
